About the data

Everything here comes from Open-Meteo. The yearly and 12-month figures use its historical dataset, which is based on ERA5 reanalysis: it reconstructs past weather from observations on a grid of cells several kilometres wide, instead of reading a single rain gauge. That makes every city directly comparable, but the numbers can differ from the weather-station averages quoted elsewhere.

Sydney shows the biggest gap: a year here, against 1,213 mm at Observatory Hill. London's St James's Park station records about 628 mm, slightly less than the here. The headline holds either way: on station figures too, London gets less rain than Rome, New York and Sydney.

A dry day is one with less than 1 mm of rain, the flip side of the usual meteorological definition of a rain day.

Real data, no myths. The league covers (rainfall records take about a week to be finalised), the yearly averages . Current conditions refresh every 15 minutes.
